In September 2017 I was able to take a Mediterranean cruise which allowed me to experience three different Italian ports. In the first I visited Portfino and Cinque Terre. In the second port I took a bus tour of Rome with a quick stop at the Vatican. No time for an inside tour just an outside one. Last port was Sorrento and Pompeii. Next September will see me once again visiting the ports with my oldest daughters and my mother and hopefully seeing different things. I will still miss a chance of discovering Venice which has long been on my bucket list.
My ultimate Italy vacation would be 4 nights in Rome, 5 nights in Florence and 4 nights in Venice with Monograms. I have not mentioned before but with Monograms they have carefully screened and selected the right hotels in the heart of the destination and you can choose your accommodations to match your style and budget. A local host will be in each city you visit along with a destination guide with city maps. Buffet breakfasts are available daily. The day by day that I would follow with Monograms is as follows:
Day One arrive in Rome the "Eternal City"
Day Two your morning guided sightseeing, with headset, is rich in religious and ancient history. Visit the Vatican Museum to see its amazing treasures. In the Sistine Chapel, where the conclave is held to elect new popes, view Michelangelo's The Last Judgement and his famous ceiling paintings. Also on the agenda today, enter monumental St Peter's Square and Basilica, built in 313 AD above St Peter the Apostle's tomb and home to Michelangelo's masterpiece Renaissance sculpture, the Pieto. Cross the Tiber River and continue your immersion in history at the iconic Colosseum, built for 50,000 spectators, and the Roman Forum, where the oldest structures of the ancient city are located.
Day Three and Four you are on your own. You can pre-book activities if you wish or play it by ear and get suggestions from your local host.
Day Five travel first class by high speed train to Florence
Day Six your morning guided sightseeing, with headset, includes a visit of the Academy of Fine Arts with Michelangelo's original David. Walk through Cathedral Square, sculpture-studded Piazza delta Signora, the center of the city's political life since the 14th century; and Santa Croce Square. Also admire medieval Porto Vecchia, the arched, stone merchant bridge spanning the Ana.
Day ten you take a high speed train first class to Venice.
Day eleven experience morning guided sightseeing, with headset, features St Mark's Square and Basilica with its exceptional gold mosaics. Visit Doge's palace and the evocative bridge of sighs. Watch skilled glassblowers fashion their delicate objects in the age-old manner, and learn why glass making was so important in Venetian history. Entrances to Marciano Library and the Corer and Archaeological Museums are included.
Day twelve to thirteen you have full days to explore the intriguing city of canals and bridges at your own pace. You can also pre book excursions or rely on your local host for recommendations.
Day fourteen ends with breakfast in the morning and a transfer to the airport.
All transfers are included from the airports, train stations and hotels.
