Harry Potter Travel Bucket List

Bucket list travel. I have discussed this before. There are so many places and things to do in this world that are bucket list worthy so I am going to touch on a few different types in my next few blogs and in my blogs over all. As I have mentioned before I even have a Disney specific bucket list. I have family lists, single lists many many travel related lists.
This is one of my new lists that I wish to attempt and I have a daughter cheering me mine. So after my Game of Thrones Ireland tour next August 2020 I believe I will have a Harry Potter group tour so that we may check off a good potion of this list.

First on this list is Alnwick Castle found in the county of Northumbland. The iconic Alnwick Castle is home to Harry Potter-inspired events, dragon quests and an exciting history. Second on the list The Elephant House is a café on George IV Bridge in Edinburgh, Scotland. The café labels itself as the “birthplace of Harry Potter” since this is one of the cafés where J.K. Rowling would write in the early days of Harry Potter creation. She would walk around Edinburgh with her baby, waiting for her to fall asleep so she could go to a café to write. Third on the list is Leadenhall Market's beautifully covered pathways stood in for Diagon Alley in the first Harry PotterFilm. Hagrid and Harry walk through the market and then enter the Leaky Cauldron Pub through a blue door. Leadenhall Market is in Central London, on the edge of the financial district.
Fourth on the list In the Muggle (or non-magical) world, the iconic house at 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey is actually located at 12 Picket Post Close, Bracknell, Berkshire—about 40 miles west of London. The sixth item on the list I have posted about before The Glenfinnan Viaduct is a railway viaduct on the West Highland Line in Glenfinnan, Inverness-shire, Scotland. Located at the top of Loch Shiel in the West Highlands of Scotland, the viaduct overlooks the Glenfinnan Monument and the waters of Loch Shiel

Number six Lacock Abbey is the most iconic Harry Potter filming location in Lacock and the interiors were used as the interiors of Hogwarts School for a significant number of scenes in the first two Harry Potter films. More recently, it has also been used in the Fantastic Beasts film: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Number seven Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry came to life via a number of locations across the UK, one of which was the awe-inspiring Durham Cathedral.Durham Cathedral's ancient cloisters doubled as a film location for Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone back in 2001. Number eight is Black Park in England. Many films have been filmed in this location.

Number nine is Czocha Castle in Poland. For Harry Potter fans, a castle in Czocha in south-western Poland has been transformed into a school of wizardry. For four days sorcerers are taking part in live action role plays where they can "tame magical creatures in the forest". Now how cool is this. This one definetly could not be worked into a England/Scotland trip it would have to be separate.
Number ten is The Georgian House Hotel in London. Ever wondered what it’s like to sleep as a wizard? The Wizard Chamber at the Georgian House Hotel will transport you to a world full of magic and marvel. Concealed behind a bookcase door, curious guests can enjoy venturing to the Wizard Chamber on the lower ground floor of our 19th century hotel. Pass through a portrait-lined passageway that is bathed in candle light that casts dancing shadows across the walls.Created to conjure a mysterious and gothic feel, each room features faux castle details such as stained glass windows, stone walls, archways, trunks, cauldrons, four-poster beds hung with velvet curtains and an abundance of other curious artifacts. Wood burning stoves, cauldrons in fireplaces and tapestries complete the look. Nine and ten are making me want to put a trip together sooner what about you.
Number eleven is Balmoral Hotel in Scotland. If you enter the hotel, pass the hall and turn right into the elevator, go to the fifth floor, exit the elevator and walk through the corridor to the right, you will find the door of Room 552 in the corner, decorated with an owl and a small golden sign: The J.K. Rowling Suite. This is where J.K Rowlong finished writing Harry Potter and the deathly Hollows. Number twelve Warner Bros. Studios Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter is a public attraction in Leavesden in southeastern England. t is a permanent exhibit offering an authentic behind the scenes glimpse of the Harry Potter films
Number 13 Within the realm of Harry Potter, Loch Shiel can often be seen as background scenery in the films and we believe it shows up at least briefly in all 8 movies. It is also the setting for many of the scenes of the Black Lake (or “Great Lake”) although directors often used several lakes to depict the same location depending on the scene. Number 14 I have actually already visited although back in 1996 long before Harry Potter which is Piccadilly Circus. Continuing with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Piccadilly Circus was a key location in the film when Ron, Hermione, and Harry narrowly avoided being hit by a London bus. 

Number 15. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter can of course be found at Universal Studios in Orlando and Hollywood. This has been on my list for some time and of course would be a totally separate vacation package. They have just added a new Hagrid ride this year. I believe they will continue to add to these attractions especially with Fantastic Beasts becoming a franchise.
Number sixteen Platform 9 3/4. In the wizarding world, Harry and his friends get to the platform by dashing through a brick wall between platforms 9 and 10. Meanwhile, in the real King’s Cross, platforms 9 and 10 are separated by tracks, but you can find a platform 9¾ on the wall in the station concourse. You can take pictures or have pictures taken and pick them up and pay next door at the Harry Potter gift shop. Number seventeen is the Bodleian Library.  The Hogwarts Restricted Section is actually the Arts End of the medieval Duke Humfrey's Library, the oldest reading room at the Bodleian.
Number eighteen Christ Church College in Oxford, England, was founded in 1546. Its campus has served as architectural inspiration for academic institutions around the world as well for sets for numerous films, including some of the Harry Potter series. Number nineteen Potentially only for the most potty of Potter-heads is Harrow School, the filming location for Professor Flitwick's Classroom in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Number 20 is the London Zoo which is where we see Harry first using his powers allow he does not yet know it when he frees a snake in the snake exhibit.  Number twenty one is The Millennium Bridge (a.k.a. ... Potter lovers will know that in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince it is Brockdale Bridge (Not the Millennium Bridge) that is targeted by Death Eaters who are quickly escalating their attacks in the muggle world.Number twenty two moves so you definitely need a plan for visiting this one. Harry Potter: The Exhibition is a traveling exhibition of props, costumes, and other artefacts from the creation of the Harry Potter film series. The exhibition originally opened in April 2009 at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois, United States. It is currently in Valencia until August.
Number twenty three Harry Potter In Glencoe. Filming for the third Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, took place on location in Glencoe in May and June 2003. ... The sets were located so as to take in the fantastic scenery, overlooking the Torren Lochan, and the Signal Rock forest to the rugged hills of the glen. Number twenty four is the  Goathland station which serves as the Hogwarts Express stop at Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter films. Number twenty five is Seven sisters county park the cliffs are used as back in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Last but not least is Steall Falls also used in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Lord of the Rings - New Zealand - October 2020

For those of you who love the Lord of the Rings series and want to experience New Zealand, this is the tour for you. Happening in October 2020 to give you plenty of time to save up or make monthly payments. Maximum of 14 guests. We may be able to squeeze it up to 19 if we do get the nineteen we may be able to bring the price point down.
Day One October 20th we arrive in Auckland New Zealand. We will be met by a local guide and a coach will transfer to our hotel. Check in is at 3:00 pm so we may go and explore. We will be staying here for 3 nights. Dinner will be included at the hotel this evening. Breakfast will be provided every morning of the trip.

Auckland

Day Two October 21st we will be picked up by a coach for your "Best of Both Worlds" tour. We will experience the best sights of Auckland City in the morning combined with an afternoon Wilderness Experience. Aukland is a set of 52 dormant volcanic cones and between two harbours, the sparkling Waitemata and the brooding Manukau. Know as he City of Sails, its New Zealand's largest and busiest city. The morning tour is a journey of discovery designed to explore the history and sights as well as how Aucklanders live and play.  A 30 minute drive from downtown brings you to Arataki Centre, the gateway to the rain forest, where the sweeping decks give breathtaking panoramic views from the Tasman Sea tot he Pacific Ocean. Absorb the local history and admire the traditional Maori carvings that stand guard there. En-rout we will have the chance to purchase lunch, alternatively a boxed lunch can be requested at an additional cost. Head further west and experience the power of the wild and rugged west coast. Feel the black sand beneath our feet as we stroll along some of the most awe-inspiring beached the world has to offer. With our knowledgeable and experiences guide, our eco-tour continues on the lush rain forest where we will hear native birdsong as we walk the easy bush tracks amongst New Zealand's famous kauri tree and giant tree ferns. When the walk is done we had back to Auckland. Dinner is on our own this evening.
Day Three October 22nd we will make our way to the downtown ferry terminal for the public ferry to Waiheke Island. Our ticket is an pen ticket. On arrival to the islands we will be greeted by our tour driver and taken first to Stonyridge Vineyard for a tour and tastings, plus a scrumptious light lunch. We will then head to the award winning Ramgihoua Estate for olive tasting, followed by a stop at Wild on Waiheke, which offers optional beer tasting as well as wine. Here, we will also get to sample locally produced olive oils and preserves. The tour concludes with tastings at the beautiful Mudbrick Vineyard while enjoying stunning views over the Hauraki Gulf. We can then use our complimentary bus pass to further explore the islands and head back when we are ready to. Dinner is on your own. Both the guides and hotel staff will be able to give us great recommendations for local restaurants to try out

Day Four October 23rd we will be collected by private coach fr overland transfer to Rotorua where we will stay for two nights. Rotorua Waitomo will be our first stop where we will be taken on a 45 minute guided tour through the world famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves. We will complete the tour with an unforgettable boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto that is illuminated by thousands of tiny glowworms. We will get back on our coach and continue to visit Hobbiton. Discover the real Middle-earth on the most picturesque private farmland near Matamata in the North Island of New Zealand, where you can visit the Hobbiton Movie Set from the Lord of the Rings film trilogy in a fascinating two-hour guided tour. There are spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges from the rolling green hills of the movie set, which is still a working sheep and beef farm. As the Hobbiton Movie Set is located on a real New Zealand farm. we also will have an authentic and unforgettable Sheep farm experience. We will see how the shearer cleverly handles the sheep, plus take the opportunity to cuddle and bottle feed the pet lamb. We will enjoy lunch here. We will then head to our hotel and dinner is once again on our own.

Hobbiton

Day Five October 24th We enjoy a day of sightseeing in Rotorua. Our first stop will be the Rainbow Springs, set on 22 acres of beautiful native trees and streams, Rainbow Springs is home to a huge variety of New Zealand's most precious inhabitants. We can enjoy walking through the many free flight aviaries, feed the biggest wild trout you will ever see, and come face to face with pre-history in he eyes of a Tuatara - a living dinosaur, watch New Zealand's own kiwi in their natural environment as they forage for food and admire the native New Zealand bush surroundings with over 90 different native plants, trees and ferns throughout the park. We will enjoy a 30 minute guided tour Behind the scenes Kiwi Encounter. See the Operation Nest Egg kiwi conservation project on action as we tour through the incubation, hatch and nursery rooms. We will re-board our private coach to visit Agrodome Farmshow. The World Famous Agrodome for an authentic farm experience. The sheep show will take us through a fascinating insight into the world of New Zealand agriculture. During this multi award winning show we will be entertained and informed as a real kiwi shearer (black singlet and all) presents 19 breeds of champion sheep, shears a sheep using the work record Bowen technique, works noisy Huntaway and silent Strong-Eyed dogs and completes the NZ dog trial. Have an opportunity to milk a cow and feed a lamb. We then continue to Te Puia for a guided tour. Te Puia is New Zealand's living Maori cultural centre, situated in Whakarewaewa Geothermal Valley. Te Puia's 60 hectare site is home to the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institue, a live kiwi enclosure, the world-famous Pohutu Geyser, and more than 500 geothermal wonders. With land steeped in ancestral history, and a guiding legacy that stretches back to the 1800s, Te Puia offers unique hospitality and rich cultural heritage. We then return to the hotel for some leisure time. In the evening we will be collected from our hotel this evening by a representative of Tamaki Tours for our combined Hangi (dinner) and Concert tour. Welcome to a world of ancient Maori and proud warriors - a world that unfolds with a journey back in time through the Maori village of "Te Tawa Nghare Pa". Experience the pre-European lifestyle and customs of the ancient Maoru ancestors as the village comes alive with tribal songs, dance and activities. Enjoy a night of truly authentic, traditional culture and entertainment. Feast on a selection of foods cooked the traditional Maori way on hot stones in an authentic earthen oven. The tour includes transport to and from the accommodation with coach commentary and Maori guide to instruct you on protocol.

Day six October 25th we will be collected from our hotel and taken to the Rotorua Airport where we will fly to Christchurch (this cost is not included in the land quote) We will be greeted and taken to our new hotel for the next 2 nights.
Day seven October 26th We will be collected from the hotel for our full day 4WD Lord of the Rings Edoras Tour. We will Journey to the Lord of the Rings filming location: remote and beautiful Mt Potts high country station, home of Mt Sunday. We will see how this peaceful mountain was transformed into Edora, the capital city of the Rohan people in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Immerse yourself in the natural, unspoiled beauty of this breathtaking area with its sparkling clear lakes, glistening blue rivers and fresh, crisp mountain air. We will enjoy a delicious champagne picnic lunch. Dinner is on our own this evening.
Day eight October 27th Today we will be collected and transfer to Queenstown. We cross the Canterbury Plains to Mount Cook, known by the Maori people as "Cloud Piercer", and then continue over the Lindis Pass through Beautiful landscapes to Queenstown. We stay 5 nights at this hotel. Again guides and hotel staff will be happy to provide suggestions for places we can go for dinner.
Day nine October 28th We will be collected for a full day tour. This tour will visit Lord of the Rings/Hobbit filming locations around Queenstown (Arrowtown, Kawarau, 12 Mile DElta, Wakatipu, Glenrochy and Mt. Aspiring National Park) This does include a restaurant lunch.
Day nine October 29th we will be picked up for a half day Safari of the Scenes - Glenorchy Tour. For true Lord of the Rings fans, this is the trip where Nomad Safaris really does take us There and Back again. This scenic sightseeing tour takes us from Queenstown to Glenorchy stopping at breath-taking viewpoints. En route from Glenorchy follow the Dart River to the spectacular filming location for Isengard. This location offers stunning views of Mt. Earnslaw. Heading to Paradise discover the location for the Forrest of Lothlorien. Leaving Glenorchy and heading towards Queenstown you will stop at 12 Mile Delta to explore the location of the Ithilien Camp. The Safari of the Scenes - Glenorchy also includes locations from Xmen Origins: Wolverine, and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
Day ten October 30th we will be collected by coah to transfer to Te Anau where we can board a boat to explore Fiordland National Park for approximately 75 minutes. Far from the crowds found elsewhere, journey from the glistening lakefront in Te Anau to the quiet banks of the Waiau River, travelling the waters as far as the deserted shores of Lake Manapouri. Experience a hidden world framed by solemn mountains and wild forest, steeped in natural beauty and history. Embrace a rare opportunity to emerge ourselves in the remote isolation of Fiordland National Park - famous for its conservation efforts and one of the largest protected areas in the world. Pause in the otherwordly yet familiar places, made famous by scenes in Lord of the Rings; disembark and explore the native bush beyond the beach, lose track of time listening to the rare birdlife, spotting the Rainbow and Brown Trout in the crystal clear waters and breathing in the ancient beech forest when your guide quiets the engine for a spell to let the current take over.

Fiordland National Park

Day eleven October 31st enjoy the day at leisure exploring Queenstown on our own. In the evening a coach will pick us up for transfer to the Skyline Gondola Restaurant. The cableway leaves every few minutes and takes approximately ten minutes to reach the top. Recently redesigned and extended to give even more expansive views with unsurpassed facilities, the Skyline Gondola, Restaurant and Luge complex sits high about Queenstown on Bob's peak, 790m above sea level. We will take the cableway to the top. The gondola consists of an Austrian Doppelmayer system with a vertical rise of 450m and an incline of 37.1 degrees it carries 700 people per hour in four seater cabins. Dinner in the restaurant offers a tempting six course "Taste of New Zealand" buffet in a relaxed atmosphere. A tiered seating design and floor to ceiling windows allows an unhindered view of the Wakatipu panorama. The restaurant is fully licensed and has live entertainment every evening. After dinner we return via the Cableway to our coach for transfer back to the hotel.

Day twelve Nov 1st we will be picked up by a coach and taken to the airport to catch a return flight home.
The land portion of this tour costs $8215.20 CAD per person based on double occupancy. A $200 CAD per person non refundable deposit is required. If you do your deposit in May and then do 15 payments until August 15th 2020 of $534.35 CAD you can pay the vacation off. We can not quote airfare until about a year out. So airfare both for the international portion and the inter country flights would be additional. If we can get more than 15 people on this trip we can possibly reduce the price by about $600 CAD per person which would mean one less payment. Game of Thrones - Ireland - August 2020

Tonight is the long awaited airing of the final season of Game of Thrones. I can not wait to find out what happens. I have also read the books and would really like the next installment also.
In honour of this being the last year of Game of Thrones and not wanting to let it go I have created a group travel package. Game of Thrones in Ireland August 2020. It is open to a maximum of 14 people. The minimum deposit is $200 CAD non refundable to book. Final payments are due May 15th 2020 and you can set up a payment plan. Right now we only have the land portion price as air is not yet available to book. Land is $3560.48 CAD per person based on double occupancy. If you would like a single room you can do so for an additional $794.08 CAD.
Now for the details of what we will be doing and seeing while in Ireland. We arrive in Dublin on August 22nd. We will be met at the airport by an assistance guide and we will board a motor coach to travel to Meath. You will have some free time to explore Kells which is named after the book of Kells. After wards we will continue on to Belfast to our hotel. We will stay 2 nights at this hotel. Dinner is on your own at a local pub or restaurant. Both the tour guide and hotel staff can probably make some recommendations.
August 23rd will see us enjoying a tour of some Game of Thrones highlights along the eastern part of the Antrim coastline. We will pass by Larne, the picturesque gateway to the Glens of Antrim, arriving at Cairncastle where Game of Thrones dramatically started its episodes on the windswept Antrim plateau. From Cairncastle, travel a few short miles to striking Glenarm, a frequent subject matter for the series; its name is taken from the Irish Gleann Arma, meaning Valley of the Army. If you're feeling energetic, explore Glenarm Castle and scenic Glenarm Forest Park. We will then continue on to Ballymena where we will have free time to enjoy lunch on our own. Again our guides are capable of providing recommendations. Take time to visit Steenson's Jewelry workshop this the place where many of the pieces where made for the show. After lunch we travel to Cushendun, via a drive through Cushendall. At Cushendun we can walk the labyrinthine caves where the sorceress Melisandre came ashore to give birth to a shadowy baby in Season Two of Game of Thrones. Next we drive through Carnlough, and enjoy a photo stop at Carnlough Harbour. The canal at Carnlough Harbour is wheer Arya Stark was repeatedly stabbed by the Waif. Arya then jumps into the freezing water to escape and crawls up the steps into the streets of Braavos. We then head back to Belfast where we can once again enjoy a dinner on our own.

August 24th we depart Belfast and travel to the North Antrim Coast with a packed lunch. Our first stop will be the Dark Hedges Road, with its natural archway or intertwined trees, one of Northern Ireland's most photographed locations and the place where Ayra Star escaped from King's Landing. Next we travel through Ballycastle and experience Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. From here we will also be able to see the views of Larrybane. At Larrybane we will see the panoramic views of limestone cliffs and ocean, the site of several key scenes in the series. After we will enjoy a stop at Ballintoy Harbour, (Lordsport Harbour in the series). Ballintoy was used ad the backdrop to antihero Theon Greyjoy's homecoming. Filming for the series has not taken place at Giant's Causeway,but a visit to this area would be incomplete without stopping at magnificent Giant Causeway, a UNESCO Worl Heritage Site, with its over 40,000 symmetrical basalt colums leading from the coastal cliffs out to sea. Legend, history and folklore are combined here, beginning with the Irish tale of how the mighty giant Finn McCool created this geological wonder. After we travel to Derry where we check into the hotel we will be staying at for three nights.

August 25th we travel back along the North Antrim Coast, past Binevagh Mountain, marking the edge of the Antrim plateau and boasting panoramic views from the summit that stretch for miles. No wonder this is the location chosen for the Dothraki Sea far above the city of Meeren. Its where Daenerys is rescued by her dragon Drogon and brought to his lair. We will then enjoy some free time at Downhill Strand, and visit Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demense. Mussenden Temple is located in the beautiful surroundings of Downhill Demense near Castlerock in County Londonderry. It perches dramatically on a 120 ft cliff top, high above the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western coast of Northern Ireland, offering spectacular views westwards over Downhill Strand towards Magilligan Point and County Donegal and to the east Castlerock beach towards Portstewart, Portrush and Fair head. This area is the setting for Dragonstone beach, where the Seven Idols of Westeros was burned. We then continue to Bushmills and spend the rest of the day at leisure. We then return to Derry for our overnight stay.
August 26th we spend the day at leisure in Derry. The Derry-Londonderry area is an ancient yet contemporary city with much to explore; it is the only remaining completely walled city in Ireland and one of the finest examples in Europe. Sights include the Gothic St Columb Cathderal, the city's oldest and most historic building and the neo-Gothic Guildhal with its striking stained-glaa windows. View the port behind the building from where millions of Irish left on their journey to America. Don;t miss Londonderry's massive town walls, which were never breached, even during the 105 day Siege of Derry in 1688, the longest in British history. Perhaps take a walk on the top of the ramparts; its historical panels explain the surrounding buildings and features. Other interesting site include the Tower Museum (with artifacts dating back to prehistoric times) and the rows of quaint houses lining narrow streets such as Albert Row. An interesting place to visit close by, is the Earhart Center in Ballyarnett Natural Park, Where Amelia Earhart landed after her 1932 transatlantic flight.
August 27th we depart Derry and travel to Fermanagh, where a scenic drive awaits us along Lough Erne an impressive waterway and natural paradise for birds, wild flowers and fisherman. View the nearby island of Devenish, home to a well-preserved 12th century round tower. We can visit Marcle Arch Caves, one of Europe's finest show caves, an incredible subterranean world awaits you. A 75 minute guided tour is available on site that includes a short boat ride, followed by a one-mile walk and a climb of over 160 steps to the top. Here we can enjoy a fascinating natural underworld of rivers, waterfalls, winding passages and lofty chambers, while surrounded by glistening cave formations. Next we head to the picturesque market town of Enniskillen, a historic market town jam packed with Georgian architecture and bustling market squares. Enjoy some free time here where you may decide to visit the war memorial where eleven Remembrance Day mourners were killed by an IRA bomb in 1987, now site of a community center dedicated by Bill Clinton. We will overnight in Fermanagh.

August 28th we travel back to Dublin and enjoy a panoramic tour of Dublin with step on guide, including a drive through the Pheonix Park, the largest enclosed city park in Europe, home to the official residence of the President, Dublin Zoo and Ratra House, boyhood home of Winston Churchill among many other stately residents. Along the way visit Trinity College & Book of Kells on display in the old Library. Cultural attractions abound, including the James Joyce Center, Dublin Writers Museum, Gate Theater and the Hugh Lane Municipal Art Gallery. In the evening we will enjoy dinner and entertainment at the Abbey Tavern. When we enter the Abbey Tavern, you will be struck by its old world charm, authenticity and simplicity with original stone walls, flagged floors, blazing turf fires which gives a unique atmosphere. The Loft restaurant has been totally refurbished and retains its old world charm. Here we will also find the Original Traditional Irish Dinner and Entertainment evening. The Traditional night has been running in Howth since the early 1960s and the Abbey Tavern has has the pleasure of welcoming thousands of guests from around the globe. A four course Irish dinner including Irish coffees is served and there is an option of an entertainment only package.The Abbey Tavern signers and musicians have a long standing residency here and this ensures that they consistently deliver the nest if Irish tradition for their shows. The Abbey Tavern prides itself on the high quality of locally sourced ingredients and the ability of their chefs to get the very best from them. After dinner we return to the hotel for the evening.

August 29th we depart from Dublin and travel to the airport for the return home.

If you put down your $200 deposit this April you can then do twelve equal payments of $280.04 and be paid off by next April. You could also skip December or January with the Christmas pinch and be paid off in May as long as it is before May 15th.
