Ride for Dad

So just like when I go to conference and come back and share our great alliance with Pencil for Kids and tell you about what amazing give back program we have supported while away I am going to tell you about a charity that my family and I support locally. I started helping the Nation Valley ATV Club with there Ride for Dad event several years ago. Last year my oldest daughter joined me. This year the two oldest spent the day with me and Friday night the three girls helped with set up. It is great helping out with something in our community. Many local survivors come out and help also so they get to know who it is they are actually helping them. One of the survivors is actually a former Scout leader's father. I believe this year was the sixth time the ATV club held an event supporting ride for dad. They have raised lots of money over the years with 2 of the members having diamond status in the amount if money they have each raised which is both over $10,000.

The mission of the Telus Ride for Dad is to raise funds to save men's lives by supporting prostate cancer research and raising public awareness of the disease. Our goal is for men to continue to be there for their families and friends for years to come. The parade of vehicles grabs the attention of the masses and the media on ride day, the research helps find hope for the future and the awareness has the potential of saving men’s lives today. We raise funds through large scale one-day motorcycle, snowmobile, watercraft and ATV ride events and through ongoing public fundraising throughout the year. TELUS Ride For Dad events take place in multiple cities from coast to coast all across Canada.
Ride for dad has raised 33 million dollars since they started in 2000. They had three ATV rides this year, 3 Snowmobile rides and they have 28 motorcycle rides scheduled for May and June.
This past June the 1st Ottawa held their Motorcycle Ride for Dad and it was a Poker run. They had five stops throughout the day. Got to pick a card and every stop and try and make the best poker hand possible. The first stop was the start, second stop was Morewood, Third stop the Ingleside Masonic centre, Fourth stop the point in Iroquois and fifth and final stop was the arena in Winchester. While I did have an opportunity to have a vendor table set up in Winchester at the last stop. My Family and I decided to volunteer at the Ingleside Masonic Center.
I was there along with my husband, youngest daughter Katherine and son Daniel. Victoria was in Maine for the weekend and Elizabeth was at the Scout's end of the year camp. We had coffee and treats set up. However we were working the card tables. Were each rider got to pull a card and you added it to their hand.
I love exposing my children to giving back and supporting good causes. The girls already do this with rainbow but it is great when we can do it on our own also.

Insurance and why it is Important

Travel Insurance I know I have written about it before and i am writing about it again and I will continue to write about it until everyone realizes just how important it is and does not travel without. Also so that people educate themselves on what they do have also as unfortunately all insurance products are not created equal.
I know the first thing that comes to your mind insurance is not cheap and for a family you can add sometimes up to $500 more to the cost of the trip by adding it. Who wants to add that much to a trip when you do not see the value of that money. My answer to that is do you have the money should something occur outside the country to covers those costs which can get into the thousands of dollars. Do you want to lose your home to medical expenses incurred that could have been taken care of for $500. Do you want to lose your life's savings? If you answer no to either questions than travel insurance is for you.
There are always travel horror stories in the news, accidents, missed flights, deaths, weather or political events etc.. You listen to many of them and think they are just too outrageous to ever happen to you. So in doing my research for this blog. I cam across incidents that have been included in insurance reports not big news items. Mostly because these people all had insurance and so did not need help paying for these things.
My first story is a young lady travelling in Thailand. She was experiencing a sore stomach and let it go for several hours. She finally could not bare it any more and went to a local clinic to find that her appendix were  infected. She was in a remote village and had to take an ambulance (a truck with a bed in the back) 4 hours to a local hospital by the time she got there her appendix had burst. All of this was covered by insurance, even the ambulance ride. Another lady was riding a bike in Bali and a stray dog bit her. She had to get rabies shots for 4 months. Insurance paid for all of them and even paid to replace her jeans. All things that you would not expect to happen.

Another example a UK couple were 30 days into a 90 day vacation. Out in the middle of Turkmenistan when they received news that his mother was dying. They arranged flights back home. Insurance paid for the new flights and covered the unused visa's and 60 days of the trip not used. They would have been out a significant amount of money and no trip had they not. Another women was scheduled for a ski trip when she hurt her knee and had to cancel her trip. Her insurance covered everything she had booked.

Remember a few years ago now when the Iceland volcano erupted and spewing ash all over Europe and wrecking havoc with flights all over Europe. Many people had flights cancelled had to stay longer in countries than anticipated had to travel across Europe by train to try flying out further away. Some could  not even leave for scheduled vacations. Anyone who had travel insurance would be covered by this occurrence.

These are all little things that could have become so big and really unexpected and no warning to any of them. Costs for for treatment can add up so quickly depending on where you are. I checked out some average prices for treatment in the United States. Treating a concussion can average $18454 USD. An Ambulance ride can cost between $224 USD to $2204 USD depending on the state you are in. X Rays can run you between $260 USD to $460 USD. An average hosiptal stay is $10,000 USD.  A broken leg or arm can cost you $2500 USD. My nephew at 18 months old was walking on an even sidewalk stepped down the wrong way and ended up breaking his leg. Literally in a blink of an eye it could have just as easily happened while on vacation and cost a small fortune to treat.
Contrary to popular belief OHIP does not cover you for medical treatment abroad. It used to cover a few piddly things and those have just been recently removed as well. A women fell in Crotatia and hurt her head a few years back and needed surgery her family asked OHIP to cover the cost of air ambulance home. They of course refused as it is not covered. They then turned to foreign affairs to help with the cost of an air ambulance. They were once again denied. It is not something are government is meant to do. They had to resort to fundraisers and crowd funding sources. Travel Insurance would take care of all that and no need to ask family, friends and strangers to help you get the help you need.

As another comparison I looked at prices for care in Mexico an ambulance ride will cost you $2500 USD or more. Xrays from $210 USD to $1000 USD. Hospital stays are over $10,000 USD.
I use Manuife for all my insurance needs party because I do not like credit and have one credit card with a $5000 limit on it that really would not go very far should something happen to anyone in the family. The nice thing with Manulife is I do not have to pay out of pocket they cover everything up front so again no worries. Many work benefit plans and credit card benefit plans you have to pay out first and then be re-imbursed. I heard a horror story of a women who had work coverage paid $80,000 in expenses for an injury abroad and spent almost 8 months trying to get the claim in order and payouts. She almost went bankrupt over it. Can you afford to have that kind of money in limbo for any length of time let alone 8 months.
Even travel within Canada but outside your province you should have travel insurance. Our health care when not covered by a provincial plan is just as expensive as some of the prices you see for American Health care if you are a non resident.
So please protect yours and your families interest and get a travel insurance policy in place

Galaxy's Edge...

Star Wars Galaxy Edge has now officially opened at Disneyland!! So far their opening has been much better than the Avatar opening was in Animal Kingdom, Disney World. When Avatar opened people were waiting in lines for six hours to see and experience things. For Disneyland guest were able to apply for a special ticket letting them into Galaxy Edge as long as they already have a park ticket and they were given four hours to explore the land and then had to leave giving more people the chance to view and experience. Hopefully the same process will be used when the Galaxy Edge in Disney World opens in August of this year.
The Millennium Falcon is a Star Wars icon, and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge makes dreams come true for those who’ve wished to step aboard the “fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.” In Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, you
will strap into theFalcon cockpit and take the controls as either a pilot, gunner or flight engineer on a mission to deliver smuggled goods while avoiding any… unnecessary entanglements.

Black Spire Outpost in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is home to a bustling marketplace, full of vendors showcasing wares from across the galaxy. Pick up authentic Batuuan attire with a stop at Black Spire Outfitters, start a collection of rare artifacts at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, or peek into the cages in the Creature Stall. The marketplace’s twisting pathway is just waiting to be explored, with something new to see seemingly around every turn.

Ever since Luke Skywalker sat down for a family meal in Star Wars: A New HopeStar Wars fans have had this burning question: What does Blue Milk taste like? Now at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, they'll finally have their answer. The Milk Stand in the Black Spire Outpost marketplace offers both Blue and Green Milk, delicious frozen blends with dashes of fruity accents.

Whether it’s the large podracing engine hanging overhead, the former smelter droid turning a spit of meats or just the savory smells wafting by, Ronto Roasters is sure to grab Guests' attention. This marketplace stall offers mouth-watering Ronto Wraps and sweet-or-spicy Nuna Turkey Jerky, as well as a selection of specialty beverages.

Constructing a lightsaber is a rite of passage in the life of a Jedi, as this elegant weapon from a more civilized age is attuned to its wielder through the Force. Inside Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers, you will feel the presence of the Force as you craft your own lightsabers, customizing them with various hilts, décor and the all-important kyber crystals. My daughters built lightsabers on our last Disney World vacation but apparently this experience is even more exciting. Only twelve people can enter at a time

Droids can be some of the most loyal companions in the entire Star Wars galaxy, and now you have the chance to build and customize your own astromech friends at the Droid Depot. Patrons pick pieces and parts off a conveyor belt to construct one of two core models (R-series or BB-series), which can then interact with elements throughout Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

The heartbeat of Black Spire Outpost, Oga’s Cantina is a place where even the blaster-bolt scorches on the walls tell a story. Guests can gather to share tales from around the galaxy as you enjoy exotic beverages served in unique vessels and listen to spirited musical entertainment from DJ R-3X, the former droid pilot from Star Tours. Whether sidling up to the cantina’s counter or sliding into one of the establishment’s back booths, this is the best place to catch up on local gossip, make a new friend or form a new alliance.

When accessed inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the Play Disney Parks app transforms your  mobile device into their very own Star Wars: Datapad. You can then scan the contents hidden inside containers, translate languages, and tune into communications happening throughout the land. You can also use this tool to hack into droids and door panels (what the locals call “slicing”) to unlock additional stories.

You should keep your eyes open as you explore Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, because you may encounter heroes of the Resistance or agents of the First Order. Supreme Leader Kylo Ren lands at Black Spire Outpost and gathers Stormtroopers to help him hunt for Resistance fighter Rey. You may also encounter Millennium Falcon co-pilot Chewbacca or Resistance spy Vi Moradi.
According to all reports from other bloggers, media etc the opening went very smoothly and the Galaxy never felt crowded or too packed. I am thinking Disney has gotten opening a new land down pat and should be ready for the launch at Disney World.
It is not too late to book a Summer or Fall Vacation for either Disneyland or Disney World and if you would like to get on my list for a quote for 2020 once the rates drop than contact me today!!!

Travelling with Allergies

Travelling with Allergies, food sensitives or being different than the average bear can be a challenge. I am very lucky I do not fall into this category and I am not a very picky eater. I do not like eggplant but do eat it occasionally if it is mixed in with something else. Since pregnancy eggs do not always agree with me. I could not eat them at all when pregnant now it is a hit or miss but again if I throw Salsa on it and if that is not available ketchup I can usually get them down. But these are relatively easy things to deal with and honestly something I can manage on my own.
But imagine having an anaphalatic allergy to something that if you eat it you can die.The most common one we hear about at least in schools is Peanuts. But there are many of them. Shellfish is another big one. These allergies should not and do not mean you can not travel they just mean that you may have to take a few extra precautions. Buffets are hard for people with allergies because of cross contamination so order from restaurants with menus is usually the best bet.

Food Allergens

First thing to do is ask friends, family and your travel agent for recommendations on where they have traveled especially if they have allergies as well. Keep in mind these work for celiac's who must avoid gluten. lactose intolerant and vegetarians/vegans just to name a few. Before travelling ask your doctor to write extra prescriptions for anything you may need such as an epipen or any drug you may take and even take a moment to learn the generic and name brands for them in the country you will be visiting.
celiac Disease

Vegan

Language can be your biggest barrier. As a travel agent I usually deal with the suppliers and the resort/cruise line etc directly to make sure everyone is aware of your needs before you even get there. Travelling with a card in the language of where you are going explaining your dietary needs is strongly suggested. You can provide it to the wait staff at the restaurants, Make sure you are aware of the emergency facilities available for you. Manulife Insurance who I use for clients Insurance needs has an app that provides you with this information and is very easy to use.

example of an allergy card

There are many all inclusive resorts that are know for being great with dealing with allergies:
1. Grand Paladium Bavaro Suites
2. Zoetry Resorts
3. Couples Resorts
4. Dreams Dominicus
5. Moon Palace Resorts
6. Grand Velas Riviera Nyarit
Note that Zoetry, Couples and Dreams are all owned by the same parent resort which just goes to show you there are resorts out there who are willing to help people realize their travel dreams while keeping them healthy and safe.
One of our head office staff members has severe allergies too many things and has become vegan as that is the easiest lifestyle for him to adapt to deal with them. He has traveled with us on the last three Travel Agent Next Door conferences. I will be honest and did not realize in the cruise he had food issues. However the second year in Dominican Republic at the Majestic Colonial Resort I know he struggled to find things to eat and seating with other people who had food allergies they mentioned getting the wrong foods or not always having choice etc.. This past year our conference was outside of Puerto Plata at the Iberostar Playa Mita and I know that this year he had a much better time with food options etc and hardly any complaints. Even other people with allergies etc were well looked after. Now while not having allergies myself I can feel confident discussing these two resorts based on personally feedback. Moon Palace is on that list above as being a top six choice and I will be heading to Moon Palace Jamaica next April and look forward to seeing how well they treat food issues.
So please do not let these issues stop you from travelling but do make sure you book with a travel professional who can better guide you on the steps you should take for travelling and what ate the best places to experience.

Once Again Travel Agents are not a Dying Bread

So you meet someone for the first time and most often the question you get asked is what do you do for a living? Of course I answer that I am a travel designer or a travel agent. The minute it is out of my mouth the other person is responding really, I didn't think they existed any more doesn't everybody just book online?
The quick answer is that yes people book online but the longer answer is that many people do a lot of the actual research of where it is they want to go and what it is the want to see and do and they do it online but when it comes to actually book they reach out to a travel designer/agent to discuss what they have learned and what it is they want to do and have an expert do the actual booking to make sure there are no mistakes and they are getting exactly what they want.
I spent the last six years learning travel inside out. Different places to travel, different types of travel and what suite some people better. I have have taken specialists designations from different countries and suppliers. I successfully completed my CTA certification and will be shortly writing the exam for my CTC certification and I continue to take more specialization courses as well. I have been travelling with friends, family and colleagues to learn in person about products and destinations all so I can serve my clients better.

I also have chosen a niche market, an area in which I will specialize so I can provide my clients with the best travel advice possible. My niche/specialization is two fold. First I cater to the family market especially the multi generational family. Part of the reason is I am a mother of four and I travel with my children and often have my mother with us as well. I always have to keep in mind places and activities that will keep a ten year old happy and a sixty nine year old. I am great at helping with the larger than average family also. My second area of specialization is group travel putting together groups is really just one big huge family. I have a bus trip to NY City scheduled for November 2019 leaving from Morrisburg and this is hopefully the first of many travel opportunities. Have a wine club, book club hockey clubs want to travel together. Take a cruise, go to an all inclusive. See an area where a tv show was filmed then let me help you get that group off the ground.

One of the biggest questions I get asked of course is how do I get paid? People are worried my services will cost a fortune. Thankfully you do not have to pay me a penny. I receive commission from the suppliers for my services. However I do not get paid until you book and travel. Which means that if you do contact me for quotes and ideas and I do extensive work if you turn around and book elsewhere I make nothing. So please be conscious of the fact that Travel agents are working even if you are not the one paying them and that you need to book with them if you are using their service (knowledge) to make your vacation dream a reality. Trust me we do understand when things happen loss of job, more expensive than you thought, someone dies and you can not travel.
Travel agents often can add extra touches to your vacation that you will not get when booking online also. We can provide you with an experience that you may not have noticed or found that makes that great vacation an amazing vacation so please do not hesitate to reach out.
Last but not least Travel Agents help you from making costly mistakes. Just like any profession we here of the horror stories. 90% of cruises are what we call closed loop which means they start and end in the same port. However about 10% of them start in one port and end in another port. I have heard where clients booked a cruise and their air own their own. They book their air to and from Miami only to find that their cruise that started in Miami is actually ending in San Juan, Puerto Rico. You are now struggling at an airport or on the phone trying to get help to get your flights changed and without costing you a fortune. These are the things that Travel agents make sure they do not happen.
Airports and airport codes are another confusing aspect of travel. Dozen of cases have been reported of people ending up in Sydney, Nova Scotia instead of Sydney, Australia people think they are getting a deal and never realize that hey they are in the wrong country completely until it is too late. A couple from Birmingham, UK booked a Caribbean vacation so happy with the deal they got. Get to the airport to head out when they discover they had booked from Birmingham, Alabama and that is why the price was so low.
Also if your flight is cancelled for whatever reason I usually have a 24 hour number you can call for rebooking or you can always contact me. Can you contact an online booking engine if something happens while you are on vacation and you need assistance probably not. So why not support the small business owner such as myself who is supporting a family.
So as I have said we are not a dying breed if anything we are more in demand for those people who  do not have the time to research and track things down and for those who do but want to make sure they book everything just right with no mistakes.

Winter Getaway's

I know here it is June 1st and I am writing about Winter Getaway's. You are probably shaking your head and saying summer has not even started and you want us to think of winter. Yes, yes I want you to think about Winter 2020. This winter has been a rough one. It started off slow but when it hit, it just would not let go. We have had snow, freezing rain and many really cold days. The weather still has not really warmed up the best or consistently.

Most of the suppliers have now released their rates and availability for the winter 2020 season which starts November 1st 2019 and goes until April 30th 2020. Many have great sales on that can save you as much as $500 per couple. They have also have options that confirm that your price is the lowest if it goes down you can get the better price if you have their protection plan.
This is really the best time of year to book a vacation for winter for many reasons.
Reason 1: Availability you have the best options available you are pretty much guaranteed to get the dates you want to go away
Reason 2: You can usually make a smaller deposit and make payments until full payment is required which will be Fall, Paying for a vacation this way takes a lot of stress off everyone. It is one of the reason's I book my cruises so far in advance giving me more time to pay for them.
Reason 3: Category you are guaranteed the category you want. Yes there are often last minute deals and they are good but they are often for the top categories as that is usually that what is left over. Most entry level categories are swooped up early.
I have some examples of Getaways for this winter. Keep in mind rates are subject to change these are quotes only and they are never guaranteed until a deposit is made.
